Florida Public Health Scholars Summer Program

Program Overview

The Florida Public Health Scholars Summer Program is designed for Florida high school students entering their junior or senior year who are interested in exploring careers in health and public health. Through online learning, live interaction with public health professionals, and experiential activities, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how public health improves the well-being of individuals and communities.

Participants will engage with a small statewide cohort while developing leadership skills, exploring public health career pathways, and learning how social and environmental factors influence health outcomes.

Participants who successfully complete all program requirements will receive a $150 stipend to help offset expenses associated with participation, such as travel, meals, and other program-related costs.

Program Components

1. Orientation

Wednesday, June 10, 2026 | 4:00–5:00 PM Eastern

Participants and families will attend a virtual orientation to:

• Meet program staff and fellow participants
• Review program expectations and schedule
• Learn how to access online modules and webinars
• Discuss participation requirements and communication procedures

2. Self-Paced Online Learning Modules

Participants will complete three online Public Health learning modules during the program period.

Format:

• Approximately 45–60 minutes per module
• Completed independently on the participant’s schedule
• Reflection submission required after each module

Participant Deliverable:

• One short reflection statement per module demonstrating understanding and application of key concepts

Topics may include:

• Introduction to Public Health
• Social Determinants of Health
• Health Equity and Community Health
  (Topics subject to final curriculum selection.)

3. Live Webinar Series

Participants will attend four live virtual sessions featuring public health professionals and interactive learning experiences.

Webinar Schedule (4:00–5:00 PM Eastern):

• Monday, June 15, 2026
• Wednesday, June 24, 2026
• Wednesday, July 8, 2026
• Wednesday, July 15, 2026

Webinars will provide:

• Exposure to diverse public health careers
• Discussions of real-world public health challenges
• Opportunities for participant engagement and questions

4. In-Person Public Health Experience

Participants will attend one half-day, in-person experiential activity focused on public health practice.

Scheduling:

• Date determined after participant selection
• Scheduled collaboratively based on participant availability

The experience will allow students to:

• Observe public health in action
• Connect classroom concepts to community practice
• Explore local public health environments and careers

Program Expectations

Participants are expected to:

• Attend orientation and all live webinars
• Complete all online modules and reflections by assigned deadlines
• Participate in the in-person activity
• Engage respectfully and actively throughout the program
• Fulfill all program requirements to receive the $150 completion stipend

There is no fee to participate. Space is limited and a select number of applicants will be accepted.
